Overview

This unit of study focuses on foundational skills for effective instrumental music instruction in one-to-one and group settings. Focusing on instrumental teaching, the unit explores pedagogical principles, learning theories, effective communication techniques, practical strategies and adaptive approaches to suit different ages, abilities and learning styles. Through observation, reflection and peer teaching, you will gain hands-on experience preparing lessons, delivering instruction and providing constructive feedback. You will critically examine the roles of the teacher and learner and engage in reflective practice. You are asked to consider and discuss the role of technology in teaching popular music.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically review a range of contemporary pedagogical theories and practices relevant to instrumental music teaching in both one-to-one and group learning environments;
  2. Plan, deliver and evaluate structured music lessons that respond to instrumental students’ learning needs, developmental stages, and diverse backgrounds;
  3. Elucidate appropriate musical, verbal, and non-verbal strategies to engage learners and foster musical development;
  4. Critically reflect on teaching practice and feedback to inform personal and professional growth, demonstrating responsibility for one’s learning and development as an emerging music educator.
