Our career-focused course will teach you to create effective online learning activities and content. You'll learn the production processes of learning experience digital design, and development and edtech tools.
You’ll graduate ready to work in this ever-expanding field as a learning designer, instructional designer, or digital educator.
Engage with AI tools, processes, and knowledge so that you can take advantage of rapidly changing technology. You'll examine new tools and practices, to future-proof your study.
You'll also learn how analytics can inform your work and how courses material can engage with digital tools to improve the learning experience.
This course is led by members of VU's Learning Design and Innovation team. We draw on our alumni network to gain further insights into changes in the field.
You'll work on industry and community projects, and graduate with up-to-date knowledge of technical tools and digital systems, and an interview-ready portfolio.
The course is designed for a range of professionals (both technically proficient and those less so). Classes are held online outside of business hours (no campus attendance required).

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Create and critique online and digitally enabled educational instructional projects for a range of educational contexts through the systematic application of professional methodologies;
Formulate responsible, well-informed and ethical judgments in considering the role of education, design and digital media practitioners in a complex and highly dynamic industries;
Analyse and interpret data that informs the improvement of practice and critically apply cross-disciplinary theoretical and practical knowledge to recommend actions relevant to contemporary and emerging educational settings;
Investigate the role of different cultures, values and dispositions in the design of online educational products for niche audiences and report on findings, recommendations and implications for practice;
Collaborate to develop new knowledge about online learning;
Synthesise theoretical knowledge and apply to a practical outcome.
You will undertake client-driven/industry-focused projects.
We look at education from a design perspective, producing learning designers who know how to educate using technology. Underpinning our work is educational design and how we can create learning experiences that are engaging and match our pedagogy.
You may also choose to work on projects from your own organisation, reporting back to your work colleagues as part of the development process.

During the course, you will develop a portfolio of work to enhance your job applications.
You will explore the research orientation of learning designers and issues that are important to the field, such as co-creation.
Our instructors run online classes that you can join from the comfort of your home.
This allows you extra flexibility, saves your travel time, and enables you to experience some of the digital learning experience firsthand.
Entry requirements
When assessing your application, we consider your education, work experience, current skills and personal attributes (where relevant).
Applicants for this course will need to meet the entry criteria outlined below. If you don’t meet the entry criteria, you may be able to gain entry by first completing a different course. We call this a ‘pathway’.
For PhD applicants, we offer a related ‘Integrated PhD’ which allows you to establish relevant skills before beginning your research.
You may also be eligible for course ‘credits’, where you are granted a unit or units towards your qualification for equivalent previous study or work experience, so you can graduate sooner.
Entry criteria
To be considered for postgraduate study, you will need to have specific academic qualifications, as outlined below. We also consider non-academic research and work experience for our research candidates.

Completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a similar discipline
OR
Applicants with a minimum five (5) years approved work experience will be considered for admission to this course.

Each unit has an associated cost. Your final student contribution amount will be the total cost of the units you select, which may be higher or lower than the fee listed here depending on the units you choose.
If you are not eligible for a Commonwealth supported place, you will pay the full cost of each unit.
You may be able to get a HELP loan to pay for your studies. Loans are repaid through the tax system once you earn above the compulsory repayment threshold (indexed annually).
